After an incredible manga run and a successful TV show, Fumi Yoshinaga’s Ooku: The Inner Chambers manga has finally made it to the big screen. The Japanese publisher Hakusensha has announced that a live-action television drama adaptation will begin airing in January 2023 on NHK General TV.
The anime will be based on the manga’s “Cure Arc” and “Bakumatsu Arc”, which is the first time it has been adapted for the big screen. It will also be penned by Yoshiko Morishita (JIN), who previously worked on the first season of the series.
If you’re looking for something new to watch, there are many great anime shows on Netflix that are worth checking out. Some are based on quintessential anime series, but others take a fresh approach to a story that we haven’t seen before. Here are a few of our favorites to keep an eye out for:
Blood of Zeus
The anime version of this Greek mythology epic follows the demigod son of Zeus, Heron (Derek Phillips). This hero has the power to save the world from demonic forces, and he’s got some serious work ahead of him.
Slam Dunk
Another sports anime that’s sure to please, this series follows a group of basketball players as they compete to become the best team in Japan. It’s an exciting, action-packed tale that is sure to get your heart pumping.
Ooku: The Inner Chambers
In an alternate history of Edo-era Japan, a plague strikes that kills off most men. This re-invents traditional roles for women and causes a shift in the social order. The shogun’s palace is now a matriarchal harem and the Inner Chambers are now the domain of the shogun’s concubines.
Tsunayoshi is the fifth shogun and is determined to demonstrate her political prowess, while taking advantage of her lovely appearance to lead a wild sex life. She eventually falls in love with a candidate for a concubine and makes her her sex slave.
The manga runs in Hakusensha’s MELODY magazine from 2004 to 2020 and has been compiled into 19 tankobon volumes. Viz Media holds the license to publish it in English.
It’s a must-read for fans of Japanese culture!
The Ooku: The Inner Chambers manga is an excellent read that will appeal to fans of historical fantasy and shojo. It is set in a world where the male population is dying off, and women are taking over the positions of the shogun and other high-ranking officials.
It is a dark and disturbing tale, but it is also very funny. The manga features a wide array of characters from various backgrounds, each with their own unique personalities and stories to tell.
Some of the most memorable characters from the Ooku: The Inner Chambers manga include Iemitsu, a young girl who has lived in the Inner Chambers her entire life, and Kosugi, a samurai who was once imprisoned by the shogun in the Inner Chambers.
There are a few other interesting characters as well, including Akimoto and Kinu, a brother-sister incestuous couple who have a daughter.
