The Dream arc from the Sailor Moon manga has been faithfully adapted in an animated film. The Sailor Moon Eternal Movie Parts 1 and 2 are now available on Netflix worldwide (outside of Japan)!
The Dream arc tells the story of Chibi-Usa and Usagi as they battle a group of evil Dead Moon Circus, the Amazon Trio, Queen Nehellenia’s evil plot, and the noble fights of Chibi-Usa’s love interest Tuxedo Mask. With top-notch acting, the films provide vital development for many characters, especially Chibi-Usa.
Synopsis
Sailor Moon is one of the most beloved manga series of all time and earned a worldwide fandom with its enduring message of love, friendship and justice. The Sailor Moon Crystal anime was an excellent reimagining of the franchise with gorgeous animation, engaging action and strong character moments.
But despite being faithful to the manga, there were problems with Crystal that have been addressed in this movie duology. The Dream Arc of the manga is distilled down into two movies, and while the episodes do have some pacing hiccups and the lore gets overly convoluted at times, the two 90-minute films still won’t take more than a few hours to get through.
This film also gives us a chance to see Chibi-Usa grow into a Sailor Guardian in her own right as well as an interesting battle with the Dark Moon Circus that seeks to put Earth under Eternal Nightmare. It’s an arc that wasn’t seen in Super S and has since become something of an obsession for Sailor Moon fans.
Cast
Netflix has announced that it will release Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal Movie Parts 1 and 2 to the global audience on June 3. The anime film based on the original manga by Naoko Takeuchi is a long time coming for fans, but now they can finally watch it in English.
This two-part anime is a direct continuation of the Dream arc from Takeuchi’s classic manga. It tells the story of the arrival of the Dead Moon Circus, Queen Nehelenia’s evil plot, Helios’ noble attempts to protect Elysion, and Chibi-Usa’s growth into a Sailor Guardian in her own right.
The two-part Sailor Moon Eternal movie is an excellent retelling of the Dream arc but it isn’t quite as polished or well-paced as Crystal. It feels like several TV episodes join together as one feature film rather than a condensed version of the manga, which can cause problems for those who are used to watching Crystal.
Visuals
The Sailor Moon series has captured the hearts of ’90s kids around the world with its colorful storyline and lovable characters. Now, with the release of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal Movie Parts 1 and 2, you can experience this magical universe on Netflix worldwide!
The visuals in this double feature were very well done. The animation is smooth, especially the transformation and attack animations. It’s also quite beautiful and has the right color balance that makes it look just as good as the Crystal anime.
The plot is also well-adapted from the manga. The movie follows the Dream arc, detailing the arrival of the Dead Moon Circus to Tokyo and their evil mission to steal the Legendary Silver Crystal.
Overall
Sailor Moon is one of the most popular anime franchises of all time. It launched in the ’90s and quickly grew into television, movies, video games, toys, board games and trading cards.
The latest entry in the saga, Eternal Movie Parts 1 and 2 Released on Netflix is a retelling of the Dream arc from the original manga by Naoko Takeuchi. It follows the arrival of the Dead Moon Circus to Japan and their ruler Queen Nehelenia’s plan to trap Earth in nightmares in order to take over the world.
It’s a faithful retelling of the original manga, though it does have pacing issues and misses many opportunities to develop the characters, especially Chibi-Usa and Mamoru. Still, it’s worth watching for its overall quality.
