The Story
High Card Anime, a new series from Kakegurui creator Homura Kawamoto and TMS Entertainment, is an action anime with gambling-themed elements. The show is set in an alternate world, Fourland, and revolves around a secret society known as “High Card” and their quest to retrieve a mysterious deck of cards from two kingdoms at war.
The series focuses on the protagonist Finn Oldman, a 17-year-old boy who works as a pickpocket and is a member of High Card. He also has a 7 of Diamonds power called “Never No Dollars,” which allows him to swap any amount of money nearby for an object of equal value.
The rest of the characters in High Card are a ragtag group of individuals with varying talents. The series is a great blend of comedy and action, which makes it very entertaining to watch. The animation is superb, as well, with a classic yet modern aesthetic that comes alive thanks to its slick action sequences.

High Card is a heist anime that’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat as it progresses. It’s also got some pretty awesome power systems, a great art style and a fantastic soundtrack. It’s a great series that should be added to your anime watch list in 2023!
The Soundtrack
The soundtrack of High Card Anime is a definite highlight of the series. From the opening title sequence to its climactic final battle, it’s as impressive as the rest of the show.
The music is a mix of traditional and contemporary, with plenty of recognizable tracks to enjoy. The creditable title song is a track from the band Five New Old, while the show’s opening theme comes from a lesser-known international rock group.
The show is helmed by director Junichi Wada, who also penned the script with Kenichi Yamashita, Kazuhiko Inukai and Shingo Nagai, while Haruna Nagata (Given) serves as chief animation supervisor. The character designs are provided by Nozomi Kawano, with Ryo Takahashi composing the music. The anime is set to release in January 2023.
